They didn’t have “hoarders” back in the 1950s when my grandmother began her obsession with dishes and table settings. My grandmother was a collector.
She had dishes for every possible occasion, and coordinating napkins and tablecloths and place mats and napkin rings and aprons and … and … and …
When she died 15 years ago, my grandfather BEGGED us to go through the China cabinet and the basement and the closets and take ANY dishes we might want. There were dishes EVERYWHERE.
I wish it had made sense for me to take custody of her whole collection, but there was just SO MUCH. I was so charmed by this quirky purple set, though, that I had to scoop it up. Frankly, I’m pretty surprised that there is only service for 8 in this set — Most of her collection was full service sets of 12.
The dishes didn’t make the trip with me when I made the big drive out to L.A. in 2009, but we’re now reunited, thanks to my friend Kate having room in her car on her L.A. road trip this week.
Anybody want to come over for a dinner party?
